250SX: Roczen Keeps Rockin’
Red Bull KTM's Ken Roczen looked very comfortable with the red plate target on his back, notching up his second consecutive Western Regional 250SX Class victory.

Eli Tomac opened the door for Western Regional 250SX Class championship rival Ken Roczen last weekend in Oakland and the young German not only rushed through it, he may have slammed the door shut behind him.

Defending champ Tomac was in desperate need of a rebound effort after seeing his perfect start squashed in an Oakland DNF that handed the points lead over to Roczen. However, instead, the GEICO Honda man suffered a middling start while the Red Bull KTM ace shot into the lead on the opening lap and never looked back.

Roczen not only overcame the added pressure that comes with the red plate, he upped his points lead in the process with back-to-back wins.

"Hard work pays off," Roczen said after taking the victory. "I've been working really hard and the track out there was really tricky -- it was very slippery. Overall, it was a long 15 laps because right from the start I was up front, which made it a little harder -- but also easier. I'm super happy with how it went."

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Martin Davalos, who earlier won his heat, did well to keep Roczen honest but never seriously pressed him. Davalos ultimately came home securely in second.

The runner-up said, "We busted our butt trying to get the bike better and trying to get the starts, and it showed out there tonight. I got a really good start and I was able to ride up front. I'm a little bummed that Kenny was able to pull away a little bit at the end."

Tomac scrapped and clawed his way forward after getting away in eighth. A number of aggressive maneuvers saw the former points leader slice his way into a podium position, but not until he fell hopelessly behind Roczen and Davalos on track.

After finishing third, Tomac said, "I actually felt really good all day. The heat race went really way and the Main there, I actually flinched on my start and made a little mistake. At that point, it's hard to get your jump going again. Kenny and Davalos were out front early and at that point I just scraped my way up to third. I made the podium so I can't complain too much."
