Reigning Western Regional 250SX Class champion Eli Tomac made clear his intention to retain his hold on the throne in 2013 in Saturday night's season opener in Anaheim, California. The GEICO Honda star blitzed his way to the front following a degree of opening lap drama and proceeded to dominate the remainder of the undercard main in truly convincing fashion.

However, it was actually Troy Lee Designs Lucas Oil Honda's Jessy Nelson who stormed into the opening corner in first with the holeshot. His lead would last mere meters as Nelson was sent over the bars after exiting the turn while being closely tailed by a number of pre-race favorites.

His error had waves of repercussions. Heat 2 winner Martin Davalos was taken out of contention in the domino effect, while Nelson's teammate, Cole Seely was forced to slow as well. Meanwhile, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawaski title hopeful Blake Baggett made a miraculous save to avoid crashing when impacted by the falling Nelson but dropped to the tail end of the pack as a result and could only work his way up to 14th by the race's conclusion.

Tomac made it through the carnage unscathed and was never seriously challenged from that point on.

His performance served as a stark reminder of his position over the field following a less-than-impressive sixth-place run in his heat race. He said, "After the heat race I was kind of scratching my head. I was like, 'man, am I really doing this again for the first race of the year?' It seems like I always start off a little bit slow, but I got a good start and the old E.T. was back for the main I guess."

Heat 1 winner Ken Roczen demonstrated blistering speed throughout Saturday on the works Red Bull/KTM but could only manage to keep the champ honest from second, a position he would hold to the checkered flag.

Roczen said, "I hit the neutral in the start -- I don't know how. I had a bad start but got lucky after that first corner. After that I rode my race and rode a little tight. I cased that quad and hurt my wrist a little bit. But I don't think I could have done any better. I'm in a good position and it's the first race, so there's more to come."

Meanwhile, Seely overcame his early difficulties to battle his way forward. He ultimately overtook JDR/J-star/KTM's Malcom Stewart for third and claimed the final spot on the box.

Seely said, "I would have loved to gotten a win, but I always think top-five and top-three is even better. I put myself in great position to win a title this year."

Suzuki runner Jason Anderson also got by Stewart as the two rounded out the top five.

Ryan Sipes finished sixth, one spot ahead of Zach Osborne, who carved his way from 15th to seventh. Tyla Rattray, Max Antsie, and Michael Leib completed the top ten.
