PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Superbike and SportBike races from Infineon Raceway will air Saturday, May 5, starting at 8:00pm ET and Sunday, May 6, starting at 11:00pm ET on SPEED.
It’s no surprise that Martin Cardenas and GEICO Suzuki are out front in AMA Pro Daytona SportBike points, but how it has happened was a surprise to Cardenas himself.
The 2010 series champ returned to the 600 class after a year in Superbike that saw him earn a win at Barber and was immediately expected to pick up where he left off. He has. Cardenas leads the points by 20 after two wins and a close fourth at Daytona where he was just 0.012 away from a victory.
On Saturday after Atlanta, Cardenas ran away with the victory but said he expected five riders to be on his GSX-R600’s tail. Cardenas had a big lead, but didn’t really let up despite a couple of “moments.”
DSB racing is usually a close affair, highlighted by dive-bomb passes at nearly every corner. The sight of Cardenas unchallenged and performing epic wheelies the last half-mile made us ponder if he will walk away with this title.
Sunday saw a more typical race, with Graves Yamaha’s Tommy Hayden shadowing Cardenas until the Colombian made it better through lapped traffic and then put the hammer down for the final couple of laps.
Cardenas looks outstanding on the GEICO machine. He’s clearly pushing very hard. There are times when a really good 600 rider has so much faith in his bike and is getting on the gas so early that it looks like his bike has 15 more horsepower than everyone else. Cardenas is in that zone right now.
