PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Laguna Seca can be seen Sunday, July 5 at 9:00pm PT (late Sunday/early Monday, July 6 at Midnight ET).
Coming into the all-new AMA Pro Daytona SportBike class carrying the #1x on his Erion Honda CBR600RR, signifying his status as the reigning Formula Xtreme champion, Jake Zemke was on the very short list of favorites to reign supreme in the debut season of the radical co-premier category.
It hasn't quite worked out that way.
Fresh off his dominating first-career AMA title, Zemke has struggled with machinery, rubber, and frankly, luck, repeatedly tripped up by the universe as new winners like Martin
Cardenas, Danny Eslick, and even teammate Chris Peris have stepped forward to claim the checkered flags in the developing new reality of AMA Pro Road Racing.
While flashing his typical stellar form on multiple occasions, Zemke didn't even land on the podium until the eleventh race of the season, and even that runner-up result was a significant disappointment as his weekend-long dominance at Road America went unrewarded with a much-sought after first SportBike victory.
Zemke talked with SPEEDtv.com about his season to date and was brutally honest in his assessment of what's gone wrong and why, as well as his opinions on the new DMG-led championship.
