Despite a mid-afternoon 'isolated' thunderstorm that swept across the Hagerstown Speedway, the heat races for Round Eight of the AMA Flat Track Twins Championship started right on scheduled. With the threat of more rain in the area the program was run right through only to have more light rain hit the red clay oval just as the National was coming to the starting line. After a brief wait the race got under way in a light mist. No matter to the defending Grand National Champion as he worked his way from fifth on lap one to first on lap sixteen of the 25-lap race.
The mist went away as Coolbeth notched his fourth win of the 2008 AMA Flat Track Championship season. The Harley-Davidson Motor Company-backed Coolbeth was able to first pass his main challenger in the points race, Latus Screamin’ Eagle’s Joe Kopp, then run down Glassman / LZ Racing’s Sammy Halbert to take the win away from Halbert, who was in line for his first Twins Championship victory.
Halbert had the holeshot and was pulling away from Kopp and fast qualifier American Suzuki’s Jake Johnson. Blue Springs Screamin’ Eagles’ Jared Mees,
Coolbeth took over second on lap 8 and it appeared the podium positions might be set with Halbert winning his first Twins National. Once Coolbeth got on a roll he was not to be denied, however, taking the lead on lap 16. Halbert didn’t just hand it to the champ as he repeatedly fought back. Steady laps by Coolbeth and a couple of mistakes by young Halbert left Coolbeth with a one-and-a-half-second margin of victory at the end.
Kopp held on to third with Johnson in fourth. Screamin’ Eagle teammates Mees and Bryan Smith (Moroney’s Screamin’ Eagles) battled to the end over fifth with Mees getting the nod. Chris Carr Racing / Drag Specialties’ Chris Carr was able to hold Zanotti Racing / A&A Racing’s Jethro Halbert to an eighth-place finish. Schnabel slipped back to a ninth-place finish as R&D Machine / KK Supply’s AJ Eslick rounded out the top ten.
