The AMA Flat Track Championship rolled into the Darke County Fairgrounds for the Annie Oakley Shootout and Latus Harley-Davidson / Screamin’ Eagle’s Joe Kopp picked up his third AMA Flat Track Twins National of 2008. This was the fourth time the series has visited Greenville, OH and Kopp has won three of the long rifle trophies. This one was earned following a race-long battle with American Suzuki’s JR Schnabel.

Kopp and Schnabel had matched up in the first heat with Schnabel getting the best of it and posting the fastest heat of the night, but in the 25-lap National it would be the other way around.

When the main dug off the line, Schnabel grabbed the lead off the inside pole, while Kopp gated on the outside and finished the first lap in second. Honda Pro Oils / TCR / Sunoco’s Nick Cummings and Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s Kenny Coolbeth were in third and fourth and they settled into those positions for the duration of the race.

Schnabel appeared poised
to claim Suzuki's first twin National victory as he led the first seven laps, but Kopp roared by on the low line to lead lap eight. Schnabel’s high line had him briefly back up front on lap 19, but that would be the last time he would find the point.

Kopp held a six tenths of a second lead at the checkers with Cummings four seconds back and Coolbeth another four seconds back. Schnabel’s’ American Suzuki teammate, Jake Johnson, was fifth.

The race for sixth was fierce as last week’s winner Moroney’s Harley-Davidson / Screamin’ Eagle’s Bryan Smith, Glassman / LZ Racing’s Sammy Halbert and Eric & Van Snedeker / Eddie Adkin’s Rick Marshall battling the whole race.

USC Racing / Reiman’s Harley-Davidson’s Sammy Sweet, Zanotti Racing / A&A Racing’s Jethro Halbert, Chris Carr Racing / Drag Specialties’ Chris Carr, and Team SuperTrapp’s Matthew Weidman were in a tight race for ninth and finished in that order.
