When James Stewart pulled off the track last weekend in Colorado, you could almost feel a sense of deflation from everyone in attendance. Something was clearly wrong with Stewart, but no one knew how bad it might be.

When he didn’t line up for the second moto, the concern for his health became even more real and all of the sudden, the championship swayed heavily into the favor of Ryan Dungey, who swept the day’s motos and stole away the points lead.

While Dungey will be in possession of the red number plate this weekend, the rumors surrounding Stewart’s return tomorrow at High Point have been circulating. The question was simple, will James be back?

Yesterday, the former champion confirmed the rumors, and we can now expect the two-time winner this season to go bar-to-bar with Dungey this weekend at High Point Raceway.

An apparent hand injury forced Stewart to forego essentially all competition at Thunder Valley. While he didn’t know the severity of the injury at the time, Stewart felt it was better to be safe than sorry and not take any risks by getting out on the track and potentially doing more damage.

Yes, it hurt his championship hopes to not pick up a single point in Colorado, but with so much racing remaining in the 2012 season, it’s too early to say that he can’t find a way to make that up. Right now, Stewart’s deficit to Dungey is 35 points. It sounds like a lot, but it can be made up in a single weekend.

Stewart has won 90% of the motos he’s entered since the 2008 season and 87% of the overalls. His statistics speak for themselves. Stewart's quick return reverts this to title fight to a two-man battle and the Yosh rider has the talent to overcome that deficit.

Over the past four seasons, Dungey and Stewart have been the two of the sport's biggest successes. Stewart wrapped up his 2008 title with a perfect season, while Dungey grabbed the 2010 championship with the most dominant rookie campaign of all time.

Combined, they have won 29 of the last 51 races (56%) and their championship efforts are the most dominant we've seen since the days of Ricky Carmichael. If both riders can stay on the track for the remainder of the 2012 season, this showdown will live up to the expectations.

Stewart’s return is very significant. While we won’t know for sure if he’s fully healthy until they take to the track tomorrow morning, you’ve got to believe that he’s feeling confident enough to give it a go and try to start chipping away at the disadvantage he’s facing.

Stewart keeps Dungey honest simply be being present, and in turn, Dungey forces Stewart to be at his best. We’ve already seen these two push one another to new heights, and I think it’s safe to say that every motocross fan out there couldn’t be more relieved to know James will be back in action this weekend.
