High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, is one of the classic tracks on the circuit, and the spectators aren’t the only fans of the facility -- many of the top racers in the history of the sport love the place too.

However, on Monday of this past week Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s points leader and the winner of the last two rounds, Mike Alessi, was practicing at the facility when he reportedly hit wet grass on the side of the track and crashed into a fence post, breaking his patella. He had surgery to fix it on Tuesday and it’s supposed to have gone well, but he will be out for a minimum of six weeks. He’s the second points leader to drop out of the championship due to injury already in this short season, as Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto did likewise after moto one at Hangtown, Round 2.

With Alessi, Villopoto,
and Villopoto’s teammate, Timmy Ferry, out, and with reigning champ James Stewart and multi-time winner Kevin Windham sitting out the series this season there are no racers still in the series who have won a 450 Class national. That means that, no matter what, there will be a new winner this weekend at High Point.

Many people assumed that Alessi’s teammate (and presumptive points leader), Chad Reed, had to have won an event in the past, and it’s true that he was frequently a contender for the win, but his entire 450 outdoor career took place during the Ricky Carmichael era. And during that time Carmichael completed two perfect seasons (winning every moto) and another season where he won every overall and lost just three motos. While Reed is third all-time on the supercross wins list he has yet to win a single 450 race outdoors.
