The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship makes its 2012 East Coast debut today with the 36th annual stop from legendary High Point Raceway in Southern Pennsylvania. Practice has wrapped and the starting field is getting set for what should be a great day of racing. The weather is near-perfect, the track is coming in nicely, and the riders are preparing to lay it all on the line.

Despite the concern of a lengthy layoff following an apparent hand injury suffered a week ago, James Stewart demonstrated his mental and physical toughness this morning by posting the fastest lap of practice for the fourth straight week.

Mike Alessi paced the majority of both sessions and looks to be a legitimate threat for the win this afternoon, but Stewart patiently waited until his final lap on the track to turn it up and steal the top spot away. His 2:08.757 was just a tenth quicker than Alessi, with Jake Weimer grabbing the third-fastest lap.

And where was new points leader Ryan Dungey? Fourth quickest, nearly two seconds behind his rivals.

Now we all know practice is by no means a surefire indicator of what’s going to take place during the motos, but it's certainly intriguing to see that a couple other riders have the pace to throw their names into the mix out front.

Stewart has his work cut out for him to catch Dungey in the championship (which will also include surpassing Weimer who sits second in the points). But by dropping in the hottest lap of the day, he looks more than ready to take on that challenge, and the speed of Alessi and Weimer could play in his favor his well if they somehow manage to finish between the two when in matters.

In the 250 Class, Frenchman Marvin Musquin established himself as the rider to beat in the parity-driven division. Musquin’s time was the second fastest of the day in either class, and indicates that we could have a fifth player in the mix. His 2:08.740 was absolutely blistering -- in fact, it was nearly two second quicker than the best of teammate Ken Roczen, who ranked second in the overall classification. With a KTM practice 1-2, the Austrian effort looks primed for a break through today.

Based on what he's shown already this season, Roczen has what it takes to win, but he’s been smart in his approach. Consistency will ultimately prevail as this championship wears on, but he needs to win in order to keep pace with Blake Baggett.

Could this be Roczen’s day? The opportunity is there, but Musquin presents a serious challenge. High Point has produced more foreign born winners than any other track other than Hangtown -- don't be surprised if that trend continues.

Title leader Baggett will have his work cut out for him. He had issues of some sort in the second session and didn’t post any fast laps. His first session time still landed him fifth overall, however, so don't count him out just yet.

The gate is about to drop on a day full of the world’s best riders doing battle on one of the most iconic tracks in the country.
