Who knew that Ryan Dungey had such a flair for the dramatic? Over the last two rounds, the KTM ace has made things suspenseful in the 450 Class while keeping his incredible winning streak intact.
After dropping a moto to Mike Alessi at Washougal, Dungey crashed out of the lead last weekend at Southwick, reclaimed it, gave it back up when forced to make a pit stop for fuel, and ultimately handed the moto win to Tyla Rattray but still scooped the overall victory.
The complicated turn of events was explained a bit further at the conclusion of the event. Apparently, when Dungey went down, he inadvertently knocked the cap off of his gas tank. After re-entering the race in pursuit of Mike Alessi out front, Dungey’s KTM crew noticed what had happened thanks to the television feed and decided that the amount of fuel lost was enough to warrant a pit stop.
As Dungey caught Alessi again, he proceeded to open up a lead of over 10 seconds. Moments later, his team flagged him into the mechanics area and made quick work of the refueling process. Never before had I seen a true pit stop like that in this sport, but it just goes to show you how unpredictable motocross can be.
It's hard to imagine this is something a team ever practices, which makes it all the more impressive with how quick and easy they made it look. Dungey was back out mere bike lengths behind Rattray, who had moved past Alessi, and put the pressure back on. Despite a constant push, Dungey was unable to get past the South African, a defending two-time winner at the track in the 250 Class.
The bottom line is that while Dungey continues to win and extend his lead in the championship, the action has remained dramatic. Let’s be honest, while Dungey's constant accumulation of wins is impressive, his dominance also threatens to diminish the sport's excitement. However, the last two rounds have proven there are still plenty of thrills to be delivered by the premier class.
And it’s always good to see a little shake-up take place, especially in the form of Rattray breaking through with some success aboard the big bike (also Broc Tickle’s return to the overall podium). It’s been the Dungey and Alessi show this season and rightfully so, but the action behind the duo has been fun to watch as well.
