AMA MX: The Pit Board - Washougal
Chad Reed is no longer in control of the AMA Motocross Championship chase, overhauled by Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey. Brandon Short reflects on the change at the top.

One week after the championship underwent a dramatic shakeup in Minnesota, the title fight took another intriguing turn last in Washougal. After controlling the 450 Class since the opening round, Chad Reed was unseated as the points leader, as both of his younger rivals laid it down in the Pacific Northwest to surge ahead in the championship.

Meanwhile, the incredible story of Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki continued in the 250 Class, as did the title-worthy season Dean Wilson is compiling without having yet taken an overall win.

As we head into two weekends without racing, here’s what’s on my mind:

· Coming off his epic crash at Millville, Chad Reed was still feeling the effects of freefalling over 40 feet. As a result, he wasn’t at his best at Washougal, but gave it all he had in an effort to stay in the championship picture. In the end, Reed has to be happy with a fourth-place finish, even if he did lose the points lead in the process.

· With both Villopoto and Dungey now ahead of him in the standings, we should see a different side of Reed. He’s always had the luxury of the points lead, but despite that, he’s continally stepped up. He still boasts the most wins in the class with four. However, coming from behind demands a different mentality. It'll be interesting to see how Reed responds once he gets back to full health for Unadilla.
