AMA SBK: 2009 Midseason Recap Videos
Written by: Chris Martin

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Laguna Seca can be seen Sunday, July 5 at 9:00pm PT (late Sunday/early Monday, July 6 at Midnight ET).

The 2009 AMA Pro Road Racing series has been a season of emergence and transition. New classes have been introduced and new stars have stepped to the forefront. Meanwhile, some familiar names have continued their reigns while others have struggled to adapt, and the racing has been unpredictable and frequently tight.

In the AMA Pro National Guard American
Superbike presented by Parts Unlimited class Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki's Mat Mladin continues to be the man, adding to his all-time career record marks in wins and pole positions just about every weekend on his GSX-R1000, but even in the absence of former rival Ben Spies, who has gone off to become the newest World Superbike superstar, the Australian has recently found himself challenged at the front.

The restructured class essentially merged the old Superbike and Superstock categories in hopes of fostering more affordable racing and closer competition. The effectiveness of that strategy is starting to become evident with Yamaha USA's Josh Hayes and Foremost Insurance Ducati team owner/rider Larry Pegram stepping up to claim victories in recent races aboard their respective Yamaha YZF-R1 and Ducati 1098R machinery, while riders such as Corona Honda's Neil Hodgson, Mladin's Suzuki teammates, Blake Young and Tommy Hayden, and Jordan Suzuki's Aaron Yates and National Guard Suzuki's Geoff May, and Hayes' Yamaha teammate, Ben Bostrom, have all been within striking distance of wins and on the podium as well.
