PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing season opener will air back-to-back-to-back in a three-race block (Superbike Race 1, Daytona 200, Superbike Race 2) on Saturday, March 17 starting at 1:30pm ET on SPEED.

With just days between now and the start of the new campaign, we're making our 2012 AMA Pro Superbike Championship predictions at SPEED.com.

Yesterday Larry Pegram and Josh Herrin were slotted in at #5, respectively. So now let's turn our attention to #4:

Evan Williams: Josh Herrin - Monster Energy Graves Yamaha

Herrin is a Superbike rookie, which means he's in for a rude awakening. He has a ton of talent and should be good on the big bike -- eventually.

DSB men find the Superbike races are longer, the tires go off quicker, the pack gets more spread out, and it usually becomes impossible to go from the back half of the top ten to a win with a late-race charge. Superbike racing is a much more serious and much less forgiving endeavor.

Herrin is essentially in learning mode this year and the expectations won't get serious for him until late in the year. The key to watch with Herrin is where he lies in the pecking order at Daytona and how quick he advances in the following races.

Chris Martin: Ben Bostrom - Jordan Suzuki

Those of you who have followed along at SPEED.com over the past ten years know that I have been a rather frequent critic of Bostrom. He's a frustrating combination of world-beating natural ability and inconsistent results.

This is a guy who on his day has made the likes of Troy Bayliss and Colin Edwards look ordinary, but you just don't know when it's going to be his day.

He's taken three AMA Superbike race wins during his career -- one for each decade in which he has appeared, but I suspect he'll ruin that fun little statistic this year. Bostrom is remarkably fit and can be fast and aggressive enough to give the boys at the front serious fits. He should be a fairly frequent visitor to the podium but past history suggests he won't do it quite often enough to be a full-on title contender.

SPEED.com Motorcycle Racing Editor Chris Martin saw Eddie Lawson win aboard a Kawasaki the first time he attended an AMA Superbike race and witnessed Ben Bostrom win a World Superbike race aboard a V&H Ducati the first time he worked one. He has written about AMA SBK, WSBK, and MotoGP for SPEED.com since 2003. Chris is now on Twitter.
