Prospective Superbike title contenders -- this is your wake up call.
The Superbike field had an entire offseason to try and catch up with Josh Hayes and Yamaha. Months to train, test, and figure out how an opponent won 16 races in 2012 and you didn’t.
The early returns were not good for “the field.” Yamaha’s Hayes was a shade under two seconds faster than everyone else in the first session. Conditions were cold and a tad tricky, but the result is still disheartening.
In the afternoon, the gap narrowed as Roger Hayden ended up just more than a second back on the National Guard Suzuki.
There is still time left to catch up this weekend, but the opening day was disappointing for most. If you follow the series and want to see competitive racing, it was also disappointing.
Martin Cardenas still coming to grips with the Superbike so being a little off the pace is understandable. For others like the KTM boys, their 2013 engine package isn’t yet finalized so they’ll have to wait to show what they can do.
For other riders returning on their previous seats, it makes you wonder if they can ever get the job done. If that's the case, then where are the guys out there who can beat Hayes, and why aren't they in the good rides?
Maybe some of these guys would be better off skipping the race and instead going down to the free Shooter Jennings concert at Bruce Rossmeyer's.
There’s a significant layoff between Daytona and what everyone believes to be the next round at Elkhart Lake (AMA Pro hasn’t officially removed the TBAs for April yet.)
If you aren’t Josh Hayes, you better show up to that one in the shape of your life and 100% focused on the task at hand.
