AMA SBK: Countdown To Showdown
"The race will be the judge." The stage is set for yet another AMA Pro Superbike dogfight, and this time with heightened championship implications.

The VIR cancellation that rocked the AMA Pro Road Racing paddock instantly transformed the feel of this weekend's stop at Laguna Seca from a midseason vacation round to a late-season pressure cooker.

Just three races remain and only ten points separate reigning AMA Pro Superbike champion Josh Hayes from title leader Blake Young. Upping the potential for fireworks considerably is the fact that there are five, perhaps even six, riders with at least a semi-realistic chance of gunning for today's win. And despite the ongoing Hayes/Young title conflict, every man is out for himself.

That's nothing new. While the abbreviated season schedule instantly raises the stakes, frenetic multi-rider melees have become the norm with eight of 11 races this season decided on the final lap, and more than half of those 11 featuring at least three riders in with a shot at the checkered flag late.

This weekend has developed in a similar fashion. Hayes is on pole. Again. Young qualified fourth (and on the second row due to this weekend's FIM-style grids) but has been on the pace since the opening practice. Tommy Hayden worked his two Yosh Superbikes in dramatically different directions and then brought everything he learned together into one strong package and appears more than competitive. Meanwhile, Roger Hayden has continued his recent run of strong form and honestly believes he can beat these guys straight up, while M4 Suzuki's Martin Cardenas is both confident in his equipment and eager to prove his caliber while auditioning his talents for '12 opportunities.

The odds in favor of even more fireworks are very real.
