Superbike Opener Highlights

[Friday 4:29 pm ET]

Trying To Avoid Spoilers? Look Away Now - This one was unexpected. Monster Energy Graves Yamaha's Josh Herrin earned the first AMA Pro Superbike victory of his career in the '13 season opener. Herrin did well to latch onto the rear wheel of teammate -- and heavy race favorite -- Josh Hayes. He was then well positioned when Hayes' race ended prematurely with a clutch issue.

Herrin struggled to maintain the torrid pace without Hayes' tow and was quickly tracked down by Yoshimura Suzuki's Martin Cardenas, who sat tucked in behind him for the remainder of the race. However, Cardenas made a pivotal mistake on the last lap, fighting off a big wheelie heading up on the banking for the final time, allowing Herrin just enough of a gap to beat him to the checkered flag.

Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing's Larry Pegram made it two Yamahas on the box despite the champ's misfortune with a third-place run.

Check back on SPEED.com for complete race report shortly.

Two Races, Two Barnburners. Don't Count On Three For Three... - The AMA Pro SuperSport opener followed up the H-D race with a similarly competitive and unpredictable affair. Following the early crash of frontrunner Jeffrey Tigert, a six-rider pack formed and took their scrap the entire 10-lap distance.

Motosport.com's Stefano Mesa made an early pass going up onto the banking for the final time and beat the odds by holding the five-rider freight train behind him at bay to the checkered flag.

Originally, brothers David Sadowski Jr. and Matthew Sadowski -- the sons of former AMA Pro Superbike standout David Sadwoski -- were credited with second and third. However, on closer inspection it was decided that Team 95's Hayden Gillim actually edged the second Sadowski for third.

RoadRace Factory's Tomas Puerta finished fifth, a meager 0.003 seconds back, with BP Racing's Sebastiao Ferreira sixth, the top six riders separated by just 0.274 seconds.

The SuperSport riders will wage another drafting battle on Saturday morning.

[Friday 2:40 pm ET]

O'Hara Triumphant In Eleven-Rider V&H H-D Melee Tyler O'Hara got his '13 title campaign off to a brilliant start, emerging from the chaos of a race-long eleven-rider war to storm across the stripe first in Friday's Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson season opener.

O'Hara drafted his way up from several positions back in the final run to the flag aboard his Eco Fuel Saver/Scrubblade/Bartel's Harley-Davidson XR1200, blasting past two-time DIS winner Kyle Wyman to narrowly claim the victory.

Rossmeyer's H-D-back Bobby Fong took a hard-earned final spot on the box in a race that saw eight riders run abreast on the banking and the top ten finishers within 0.792 seconds of the checkered flag.

[Friday 2:15 pm ET]

Roll On Cam - Y.E.S. Graves Yamaha's Cameron Beaubier continued his utter domination of the lead up to the 72nd running of the Daytona 200. The superstar-in-the-making earned the Rolex by claiming pole position this afternoon with a massive 1.5-second advantage over the rest of the field.

Continuing Yamaha's ownership of the developing Daytona weekend, Garrett Gerloff qualified second, adding to the morning's Josh Hayes-Josh Herrin 1-2 in Superbike qualifying.

While Beaubier's pace appears untouchable, it's much to early to present him with the winner's trophy, with 200 miles and the always tricky pitstops to negotiate. Attrition typically defines the D200 every bit as much as raw speed.

However, Beaubier's speed is fairly astonishing. Gerloff joked, "I think he's got an R1 one motor in there or something."

Triple Crown/RMR Yamaha's Bobby Fong qualified third, with former Dayton 200 winner Jake Zemke rounding out the front row on the Desmo Veloce Ducati 848.

The 57-lap Daytona 200 will get underway tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm local time.

[Friday 1:35 pm ET]

Reminder - The Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson race will kick off the 2013 AMA Pro Road Racing season live on SPEED2 starting at 2:15pm ET. It will be followed immediately by live coverage of the AMA Pro SuperSport season opener.

[Friday 11:53 am ET]

Hayes Equals Spies For Second On All-Time Superbike Pole List - Josh Hayes scooped up his first pole of the 2013 AMA Pro Superbike season with relative easy on Friday morning at Dayton International Speedway. His Monster Energy Graves Yamaha teammate, Josh Herrin, ripped off his best time on his very final lap and moved into second place, but he was still the better part of a second removed from Hayes' mark (1:37.096 vs. 1:37.826).

The pole is the 24th of Hayes' Superbike career, tying him for second all-time with Ben Spies in that category. Hayes is now second or tied for second behind Mat Mladin in essentially every relevant career Superbike statistic -- wins, poles, and championships chief among them.

National Guard Jordan Suzuki's Roger Hayden and Yoshimura Suzuki's Martin Cardenas will round out the front row for today's season opener. Hayden's new teammate, Danny Eslick was fifth, despite bringing out a red flag to end the session with a crash aboard the #23 machine. Eslick escaped unscathed and will be good to go for today's 15-lap final.

Despite Hayes' massive advantage in terms of pace, the all-important Daytona draft should provide his challengers will some hope of clinging on and giving him a race to the checkered flag. Whether they actually can or not will quickly become apparent in this afternoon's race, schedule for a 4:00pm green light.

Commenting on that possibility, Hayes said, "You know it's amazing -- when you're behind and you're looking at a guy that eight tenths out there it's like, 'Oh my God -- that's so much time. How am I ever going to find that?' When you have eight tenths, you're like, 'It's never enough.' You know? ...Last year, Blake (Young) got in there for one of the races. On any given day, all of these guys have the talent to do it. Any of them. They can learn something pretty quick. If they get in there in the first couple of laps, all the sudden they're there for the whole time. I'll just continue with my gameplan and if turns out that way, I'll try to push the pace as fast as I can and keep it as fast I can and make it so it's hard on everybody and see who can ride the bike when it's hard to ride. See who get to the finish line first."

Hayden quipped in reply, "You're getting a little greedy there Josh. Not happy with eight tenths!"

[Friday 10:13 am ET]

Wyman On Pole... But Which Wyman? - Travis Wyman held onto pole position based on his outstanding Thursday effort -- the first of his AMA Pro career. His big gap evaporated on Friday, however, as a handful of riders closed on his position at the top of the charts, headed by Steve Rapp.

Rapp, who jumped right back on his Suburban Motors H-D XR1200 after putting in his first laps on the GEICO Honda CBR600RR, came up just short of stealing away the pole, leading today's session at 2:06.184 compared with Wyman's Thursday best of 2:06.028.

Rapp and teammate Ben Carlson wound up second and third after working together throughout the session.

The pole man's older brother (and two-time Daytona H-D race winner) Kyle Wyman, will round out the front row for today's 7-lap contest, despite a somewhat rocky weekend. Wyman crashed on Thursday and got a late start in today's session as his Revolution Performance crew worked overtime to get his bike prepped.

[Friday 9:56 am ET]

Rapp In For Westby - This just in from GEICO Honda:

More than two dozen riders crashed in the same spot of the backstretch chicane during Thursday practice for the Daytona 200 and GEICO rider Dane Westby arguably got the worst of it, injuring himself enough that he will not be medically cleared to participate in Saturday's race. In his place will be veteran rider Steve Rapp, who climbs aboard the team's primary Honda to fly the GEICO colors.

"Everyone on the team is bummed that Dane got injured, no one more so than Dane himself," team owner Chris Ulrich said. "His been working so hard to prepare for the season and this new start with GEICO and Honda. He was putting up great numbers before his crash and we all expected a good result for him in the 200."

"The main thing now for Dane is that he recovers quickly and gets back on the bike as soon as the doctors give him clearance to ride. We will definitely see him back on the bike at the next round."

A 41-year-old rider from Hawthorne, Calif., Rapp has been winning races on several different styles of bikes since turning pro in 1996. He's a past winner of the Daytona 200, having won the Formula Xtreme race in 2007.

"This is obviously a really big race for the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series and for our team, as we continue our relationship with GEICO," Ulrich said. "We had a meeting when we got the official word on Dean and decided to ask Steve if he would help us out. He kindly accepted and now we'll put all of our support behind him.

"Steve is a past winner of the Daytona 200 and has been on a Superbike podium in the past twelve months. He is a true professional and can certainly get the GEICO Motorcycle Honda to the finish in the Daytona 200. Hopefully, he can earn a podium spot. He's a very capable rider."

[Friday 9:41 am ET]

Strike One Up For The Super Subs - It was perhaps only fitting in this strange era of AMA Pro Road Racing in which just about every team could upgrade their talent level by bringing in a rider off the street (paging Tommy Hayden and/or Blake Young) that an accomplished substitute rider claimed the provisional pole for the 72nd running of the Daytona 200.

Jake Zemke, a was fastest aboard the Desmo Veloce Ducati 848, although don't expect his 1:55.316 to stand up as the track will improve markedly ahead of this afternoon's second session.

The veteran pilot said, "Obviously, it's pretty cold out there right now. The track is extremely cold so everybody was taking it a little cautious I'm sure. It wasn't any special lap, that's for sure. I think we'll definitely see some bikes going faster this afternoon. But the bike is working well and the team has done a great job putting the thing together.

I wasn't coming here as of two weeks ago, so it's a nice little present to be sitting up here right now."

LTD Racing's Huntley Nash continued his impressive weekend form, running second to Zemke and one spot ahead of D200 favorite Cameron Beaubier.

Speaking of super subs, former Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp was eighth quick in his first ride aboard the GEICO Honda as he slots in for the injured Dane Westby for the remainder of the weekend.

Final qualifying is scheduled for this afternoon at 1:10pm (in what was originally planned with split A/B groups but now confirmed to be a combined session).

[Friday 9:24 am ET]

The Bike Is Fast! - A quick paddock chat with reigning Daytona SportBike champ Martin Cardenas revealed the obvious as he acclimates to life as a factory Superbike star: "The bike is fast!"

The Colombian was all smiles on Thursday as he related his early experience working with the Yoshimura Suzuki crew and his #36 GSX-R1000, although he admitted there was still some adjustments required before he's capable of coaxing the maximum performance from the machine. And while he's still more than a second off the moving target that is Josh Hayes, he's already posting competitive times with the likes of Josh Herrin and Roger Hayden, which is not a bad place to start.

Triple king Hayes recognizes the potential threat that Cardenas represents and respects his mental game, acknowledging that Martin could pose a significant challenge once fully comfortable up to speed.

The Yoshimura Suzuki crew is paying tribute to the late Henny Ray Abrams this weekend in the form of a sticker prominently displayed on the bikes' bubbles. At the conclusion of the day, a number of paddock insiders gathered for an informal memorial to pay their respects to the widely respected and hugely influential Cycle News journalist as well.

[FRIDAY 9:11 am ET]

First Pole To Puerta - RoadRace Factory Yamaha's Tomas Puerta earned the first pole position of the 2013 AMA Pro Road Racing season this morning. Well, he was awarded it this morning, anyway. He actually earned it yesterday...

Cold weather and slippery conditions on Friday morning saw a number of riders skip the session altogether and the ones that did go out only did so tentatively. Stefano Mesa was quickest in the second session but nearly five seconds off his Thursday best.

35-year-old Jeffrey Tigert, qualified second, and was the obvious elder spokesman during the front row press conference in a class more often associated with young riders, as the ace club racer is looking to return to AMA Pro competition at a serious level after only making a handful of starts in recent years.

Team 95' Hayden Gillim and MotoSport.com's Mesa complete the front row on the strength of their Friday efforts.

The 10-lap SuperSport season opener will air live on SPEED2 this afternoon at 3:00pm ET.
