AMA SBK: Rog Hayden - Clear The Way To Victory
It's been a long climb to the top of the AMA Pro Superbike order for Roger Hayden. Having nearly reached the summit, Hayden promises there is no backing down now.

Hayden flashed his emerging potential by leading a dry warm-up session at Barber Motorsports Park, and then ran the leaders down in the race before crashing out just as he arrived at the tail-end of the front group.

He then delivered a second consecutive front-row qualifying performance at Mid-Ohio and clung onto the leaders deep into Saturday's contest before a poor tire choice forced him to back off and accept fourth, finishing less than four seconds off the win in the end.

And on Sunday at Mid-O, halfway into his fourth AMA Superbike season, Hayden finally arrived as a legitimate race-challenging force in the class. Roger was heavily engaged in the seesawing dogfight for victory, dispatching the likes of reigning champ Hayes and points leader Blake Young. Still in contention for the win as late as the race's last lap, he ultimately fought off Hayes for the final spot on the box while brother Tommy took the checkered flag in first.

"It's definitely been a long time coming," Roger said of his breakthrough third-place result. "It's been a lot of work. At the end of last year I didn't really have a lot of offers going. I knew a lot of people didn't believe in me and thought that I was done -- that I didn't have that desire anymore"

He continued, "It's good to be able to reward my team because I know that they believed in me since day one. That means a lot when the team believes in you and you believe in yourself.

"It's just a big relief for me. The fans were always asking, 'When are you going to get your first podium?' It's a relief to get it over with but at the same time it feels better because it was earned.

"Honestly, I couldn't get out of the Keyhole very good but there were some sections of the track where I felt faster than those guys. Even when I would make a mistake and they'd get a little gap, I was able to close it back up…

"Like I said, this one was earned. Not only did I battle for a podium, I was second place during the race and fighting for the win."
