PROGRAMMING NOTE: This weekend's AMA Pro Road Racing race action from Homestead-Miami Speedway will air on SPEED Saturday and Sunday evening starting at Midnight ET.
Roger Hayden’s first Superbike win was a momentous achievement for the Kentuckian. Hayden has been trying for years to get the first Superbike victory. It didn't come easily.
Hayden has experienced considerable pain along the way, not only in the form of crashes that broke his back, femur, and cost him one of his fingers, but emotional trauma as well. His career has been frustrating at times.
Hayden won on Saturday by taking a big risk. The compound of the tire he wanted to use came only in the form of an intermediate. Yes, he won the dry race using a tire with grooves in it.
He and his Michael Jordan Motorsports team also gambled on the setup, not getting a chance to fully explore set-up options with the weekend's changing weather. But they got it right.
Josh Hayes had won ten races in a row and looked pretty much invincible. But he was trailing Hayden when he clipped a curb and crashed.
Blake Young momentarily passed Roger, but Hayden quickly handled Young to build an eight-second lead at one point. It was smooth sailing from there.
After the race, Hayden was very emotional as he thanked his family, friends, and his team for sticking with him.
“It feels really good and it’s been a long time since I won,” said Hayden. “I just want to go back to the truck and sit there by myself and let it all sink in. There’s been a lot of work and a lot of injuries but there’s been some people that have stuck in there with me -- my family, mainly.”
Hayden dedicated the win to the Hayden family.
Hayden also singled out the Michael Jordan Motorsports team and the National Guard. “Last year, nobody wanted to give me a chance,” he said.
AMA Pro Superbike champion Josh Hayes was quick to congratulate Hayden in comments after the races. “I know he’s been wanting it for a long time,” said Hayes of the win afterward. “It’s cool. I hope he’s proud of it and proud of the riding he did to earn it … I knew they would be strong when we got here. Rog’s confidence has been building and growing… It could set up for some really good racing.”
Now all three of the Hayden brothers are AMA Pro Superbike race winners.
