PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Miller Motorsports Park will air Sunday, May 27 at 6:30pm ET, and Monday, May 28 at 5:00pm ET on SPEED.

Josh Hayes best managed Saturday afternoon's gusting conditions to score the provisional pole for this weekend's solitary AMA Pro Superbike contest at Miller Motorsports Park.

Windy enough to make even the front straight something of an adventure, Hayes viewed the session as a personal challenge and out-paced early session leader Roger Hayden to claim the honor.

While the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha ace later admitted that there was little gleaned in terms of bike set-up due to the conditions, his provisional pole could prove important should the possibility of Sunday morning showers come into effect.

"It was very, very windy," Hayes explained, "It was a very tough session. I came in with six or eight minutes to go and the guys asked if I wanted another tire and I said, 'only if you want the bike in weeds; I'm not going any faster than that.'

"The wind is definitely quite a bit to deal with in certain areas of the racetrack -- for me I think Turn 2 and Witchcraft were probably the worst parts of the racetrack. I struggled a little bit in the last sector also.

"But all-in-all, things came around pretty quickly this morning and in qualifying. I think things are going pretty well. I'm happy with how things are going."

Meanwhile, despite openly aiming to come off the truck up to speed this weekend at Miller Motorsports Park, title leader Blake Young was right around a second off the pace of Hayes' with both MJM pilots, National Guard Jordan Suzuki's Roger Hayden (2nd) and Jordan Suzuki's Ben Bostrom (3rd), between him and his rival on the order.

Hayes, who is perpetually on a leading pace from FP1, was torn when asked whether the decreased track time this weekend (rain, wind, and only one race) could work in his favor versus Young, who frequently builds in strength as the weekends progress.

He said, "It could -- just the lack of track time. Typically I get up to speed pretty quickly. It plays in my favor in one way and it just doesn't in another. The guy can just latch on. He'll figure it out when the chips are down and the pressure is on. He has a knack for figuring it out really quick. If he has to go through a few people, then it might work out for me if I get clear. If I can get a couple guys in front of him in qualifying and they get good starts, it may work into my favor big time. If he gets a good start and he's right on me, it'll probably be a dogfight all race."
