PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Mid-Ohio will air on SPEED Saturday, July 14th and Sunday, July 15th starting at 11:00pm ET.

Josh Hayes bettered his Friday pace to secure the pole position for this weekend's AMA Pro Superbike doubleheader at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

In 2011, Hayes fell short of pole in Ohio after being edged on Saturday morning by rival Blake Young. That marked the only occasion all season long that the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha ace fell short of pole position during his successful title defense.

Hayes prevented a repeat of that disappointment with a quick time of 1:25.364 to keep his season-long perfect pole record alive in 2012, extending the run to seven this season, and nine overall.

It was the opposite story for Yosh runner Young, who only barely held onto the second row on Saturday, shuffled down to a surprising eighth on the grid.

Hayes said, "I was a little surprised that I got such a good time. I guess I put together one good lap. I had a couple of other '25s that I thought were okay. I was able to do a pretty good string of '26-flat to one '25.9, and I'm pretty sure it was drizzling just a little bit in the keyhole. I wanted to see how things would go -- we're having a little bit of a debate on tires. I can go a pretty good pace on two of them and I've been spending quite a bit of time out there just trying to sort out which way we want to go. I'll sit down with the guys and try to figure that out, but all-in-all it's going pretty smooth. "

Second quick was National Guard Jordan Suzuki's Roger Hayden, an acknowledged Mid-O master who scooped his first premier-class podium at the circuit a year ago, beating Hayes to the checkered flag for third.

Hayden was satisfied with his session ranking but not especially enthused with how it developed. "Halfway through the session I came in and put a soft tire on but I was not getting any clean laps. I kept catching Johnny Rock Page -- I don't know what he's doing; I'm sure his tires never come up to temperature. I kept doing '26.1s and I keep getting caught behind people. I was wanting to put a lot of laps together because I felt like I could do a '25, but every lap, literally, I kept getting caught up by somebody somewhere. I came in and put yesterday's soft tire back on and nobody was out there and I was able to do a '25.7.

"I'm pretty happy to be on the front row and it was a pretty good time but I would have liked to string a few more together rather than one flying lap at the end. Overall my bike feels pretty good. What tire you use for the race is going to be pretty tricky this weekend. It should be a good race."
