PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Superbike and SportBike races from Infineon Raceway will air Saturday, May 5, starting at 8:00pm ET and Sunday, May 6, starting at 11:00pm ET on SPEED.
Blake Young's big task of running with Infineon Raceway genius Josh Hayes in this weekend' AMA Pro Superbike doubleheader just became an even bigger challenge following qualifying.
While most of the leading riders took advantage of the grippy conditions to improve on their Friday times, Hayes included, Yoshimura Racing Suzuki ace Young crashed late in the session in Turn 7. As a result, the title hopeful was unable to better his previous mark and was shuffled down to a seventh-placed, second-row grid position at the tight and unforgiving racecourse.
While Young is a prodigious overtaker, he'll be forced to make very quick work of the men between him and polesitter Hayes (perfect bonus point season still intact) in order to have any hope of latching onto the Yamaha star who has won four of the last six Superbike races held at Infineon Raceway.
While Hayes didn't suffer the same sort of drama as his primary rival, Saturday didn't go exactly to plan for the champ either either, despite his ultimately posting a class-best mark of 1:35.872 -- nearly a second better than the next closest man (Roger Hayden - 1:36.775).
Hayes explained, "It was a pretty eventful session for me. I did a start yesterday at the end of qualifying and not doing a lap afterward to cool it down, I'm not sure if the heat soak is what did it, but we went out and the first lap wasn't too bad, but I got some clear track and started to pick up the pace and the clutch was just completely fried so it was spinning the whole time.
"I came in and we had to swap everything over to the other bike. The other bike wasn't matched to the one I had been riding so I it kind of had the different shock and the settings we showed up with and kind of developed away from. But surprisingly, you go back and try something again and you find it does a couple of things really well, and a couple of things we need to improve."
"Now we're going to go back and look at all the pieces and decide what we want to do for the race and see if we can't improve it."
