AMA SBK: Holden Serves Up Friday Surprise

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Laguna Seca can be seen Sunday, July 5 at 9:00pm PT (late Sunday/early Monday, July 6 at Midnight ET).

Jake Holden served up a surprise in Friday's AMA Pro American Superbike practice session at Laguna Seca, jumping up late to claim the top spot on the leaderboards.

Holden, who lost his slot in the Corona Honda team when American Honda folded their Neil Hodgson-based Superbike effort into the satellite team, only to return to the squad as an injury sub on the #100 bike and eventually remain onboard as the British pilot's teammate on the #59, outpaced the usual suspects with a quick time of 1:25.525 around
the undulating California course.

Holden claimed his first career AMA Pro victory at Laguna Seca, being awarded the AMA Superstock victory in 2007 despite crashing while running in the lead. A red flag ended the contest prematurely and as Holden was judged not to be the cause of the red, but rather oil on the track's surface, he was listed as the race's winner when the results were rolled back a lap prior to the stoppage.

Second quick on Friday was Tommy Hayden on the Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki, following the lead of younger brother Roger in making up for Ducati MotoGP ace Nicky Hayden's Friday struggles with a strong opening day outing.
