Incredibly, the AMA Pro American Superbike contest outdid the thrilling Daytona SportBike race that preceded it, thanks to an epic back-and-forth multi-rider battle contesting for the win for the entire 13-lap race. Adding to the drama was the ultimate victor, Foremost Insurance Pegram Ducati's Larry Pegram, who traded punches with the legendary Mat Mladin and not only survived but came away with the checkered flag in the end.

The two swapped positions repeatedly, exchanging the lead corner after corner with the Aussie stuffing
the Ohioan on the brakes and Pegram torqueing his 1198R back through and never putting a wheel wrong despite the intimidating presence of the six-time champ.

Pegram eked open a small advantage on the final lap and held off the advances of Mladin at the flag by 0.342 seconds in one of the most exciting Superbike races in recent history.

The victory was the second of Pegram's long Superbike career and his first as a team owner. His first Superbike win came a full ten years ago at Willow Springs.
