AMA SBK: The Secret Of Suzuki’s Success

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Barber Motorsports Park will air on SPEED Sunday night at Midnight ET and Monday at Noon ET.

Barber Motorsports Park has always been an interesting case on the AMA Pro Tour. The facility itself is expensive and classy, but the race track is somewhat limited with no real high-speed sections. It’s not a place where a Superbike really stretches its legs. The Superbikes don't utilize the full gearbox at Barber, usually running just four gears around the twisty circuit. Riders have called BMP a “paved motocross track.” (They meant it in a good way.)

Suzuki has simply dominated Barber in Superbike over the years, winning the last 14 races in a row here. The last time a non-Suzuki pilot won in ‘Bama was when Miguel DuHamel took a win way back in 2004.

Who are we kidding? Superbike-spec Suzuki GSX-R1000s have done well at every track in America. But the riches won in Alabama is uncanny.

Yoshimura Suzuki crew chief Peter Doyle said there’s no great secret behind Suzuki success at Barber.

“It’s a good statistic, but what do they say? Statistics are kinda like bikinis -- they show a lot but not everything," Doyle said. "The bikes are really good and we’ve had good riders on them. That stands for a lot of it right there.

"Maybe we’ve had some luck on our side as well. The inline four cylinders tend to accelerate well on this kind of track. There’s a lot of that here. But I don’t think it’s any one specific reason for it. Good bike, good riders, and some luck.”
