With Josh Hayes running off and dominating most AMA Pro Superbike contests from, oh, about Turn 3 on, 2012 certainly lacked the drama that defined the 2011 campaign (which might have been the single-most exciting season the sport has ever seen). However, there were still a number of highlight races this past season worthy of revisiting…

10. Mid-Ohio, Daytona SportBike, Race 1

Dane Westby returned to the scene of his come-from-behind maiden SportBike win of a year ago and took the checkered flag first at Mid-Ohio once again. However, it came in a decidedly different fashion this time around, as the typically slow-starting Westby stole the holeshot and was in the mix throughout. What was a big train of contenders at half-distance slowly whittled down to a two-man duel on the final lap where Westby outfoxed the category's preeminent late-race ace, Martin Cardenas.

9. XR1200 Season Finale, NOLA

How much more drama could you possible ask for? The XR1200 title fight came down to the final corner of the final race -- involving an arm bar and subsequent penalty -- and resulted in the first individual AMA Pro title of a decorated career that has spanned decades.

8. Cameron Beaubier's back-to-back wins at Laguna Seca and NJMP

Cameron Beaubier's arrival among the paddock's elite was cemented when he took back-to-back last-lap victories over rival Martin Cardenas by a combined 0.116 seconds at Laguna Seca and New Jersey Motorsports Park. Tommy Hayden and Dane Westby added a bit of spice to both showdowns as well, playing the respective third men in the pair of three-way dogfights.

7. Mid-Ohio, AMA Pro Superbike, Race 2

Josh Hayes was forced to dig deep at Mid-Ohio when confronted with a motivated and on-form Roger Hayden. Hayden actually took the lead momentarily on the last lap before Hayes countered and spoiled Hayden's bid for a career-first premier-class win. That would have to wait…

6. NOLA, Daytona SportBike

With the championship already decided, points were no longer a factor as SportBike standouts Cameron Beaubier and Martin Cardenas squared off for pride as much as anything. On Saturday, Beaubier tracked the champ down and forced a mistake to take the victory. However, Cardenas got his revenge in the season finale, holding off his rival and earning bragging rights for most wins on the season in the process (eight to seven).
