AMA SS: Beach Takes The Win, Dehaven The Crown
The 2010 AMA Pro SuperSport championship was decided in a most dramatic and surprising manner...

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing season finale from BMP will air Sunday night on SPEED starting at midnight EST.

Rockwall Performance Yamaha's J.D. Beach rebounded from yesterday's costly error while leading to score the final race victory of the 2010 AMA Pro SuperSport season at Barber Motorsports Park, but the real drama played out all around him.

With the weekend serving as a motocross-style winner-take-all doubleheader for the title of AMA SuperSport National Champion, all eyes were on Saturday winner Huntley Nash and runner-up Joey Pascarella.

Nash, who was easily the quickest rider in the warm-up, looked set to pull away from the start, but former LTD Racing teammate Pascarella made good on his promise to raise his game in response today. The DNA Energy Drink CNR Motorsports pilot drew right up on Nash's rear wheel as they completed the second lap. In fact, he closed in a little too tight as it turned out as Nash lost grip and suffered a near highside in the treacherous rainy conditions and Pascarella had nowhere to go, running right up the back of Nash and crashing out early in the affair.

That left Nash all by himself to run home to the national title… or so it seemed. The Georgian later crashed out himself on lap 7 when his rear tire touched the slick paint, spoiling his championship ambitions.

At that point Beach cleared off for the easy win, but the championship drama shifted back to Saturday fourth-place finisher Austin Dehaven and third-place man Tomas Puerta.

Colombian Puerta chased down Dehaven, who was running second behind Beach, in the waning laps but a minor slip entering the final chicane of the race ruined his last-gasp bid for glory as Dehaven held him off for a one-point championship victory.

Dehaven (as would have been the case with Puerta as well) has the unusual distinction of not only being crowned a national champion without a win, but being crowned as such during a 'winner-take-all' event.

Tyler O'Hara, who finished seventh on the day, won the Top Gun title.
