For the next four weeks SPEED is going to be bringing you live coverage of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. Four straight Saturday nights of bar banging, whoop blitzing, Bubba scrubbing action! It's what I call "The Month of Moto Mayhem."
It has been an incredible season with three riders splitting up the six checkered flags that have waved so far. Ryan Villopoto has flown his Monster Energy Kawasaki over the finish line jump on two different occasions to land on the top step of the podium. He set the tone early grabbing the most prestigious win of the year at the season opener at Anaheim. As Ryan heads to San Diego he holds the ace card as the points leader.
Ryan's strongest challenger has been two-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion James Stewart. The San Manuel Yamaha rider has shown more patience then ever before in his racecraft as he has racked up three wins. James still possesses incredible pace with the #7 appearing on the top of the speed charts at the end of most practice sessions. He sits second in the points, nine markers behind Villopoto.
The only other rider to bask in the glow of the flamethrowers on top of the finish line is American Honda's Trey Canard. The factory Honda rider is a rookie with blazing speed and nerves like a seasoned veteran. He used both to hold off Ryan Dungey and his Rockstar Makita Suzuki in a thrilling battle for his first career Monster Energy Supercross victory last week in Houston.
Meanwhile, reigning champ Dungey is one of a growing contingent of racers who has flirted with victory but hasn't earned the chance to stand next to Miss Supercross just yet this year. His best finishes this year has been a pair of seconds (Anaheim One and Houston). He has struggled to find his championship-winning form from a year ago, but in Houston he looked strong and gave Canard all he could handle.
