It’s a lot to ask of any rookie to even be in contention for a title in their first year of supercross, much less to win the title, but that’s exactly what Geico Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard did in 2008, landing the Lites Eastern Regional SX title in dramatic fashion at the series finale. He followed that up with a podium finish at the East/West Shootout in Las Vegas before heading off to the Supercross Awards Banquet to grab his spoils. We talked to him on Monday after the weekend out and about in Sin City.
SPEEDtv.com: This was your first-ever East/West Shootout. What did you think of it?
Trey Canard: It was good. Going into it, I had heard it was a gnarly race, and the track was always gnarly and the whoops were always gnarly, and it was good to go up against those guys. It was a fun race. I got kind of smoked, but that’s okay, I’m safe and ready to go for the outdoors. I’m not going to worry about it too
The dirt in Vegas must’ve seemed somewhat foreign, with the hard-packed blue-groove track, compared to the softer dirt you were used to back East.
I found that out like Monday right before when I came out to California and hit the test track. It was like a whole new world. Not to make excuses, but I think that was definitely one of the reasons I was as far back as I was. No excuses, though, those guys rode an awesome race and they just put it to me. There’s no doubt in my mind that they had me beat at that race. They were going good.
You can’t be too embarrassed, because the two guys in front of you -- Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto -- had faster lap times than Chad Reed and everyone else in the 450cc class...
Yeah, those guys were on it for sure and they wanted it really bad. They were focused on that race, and giving it their all every lap. I’ve got to give those guys credit. They were on it.
