AMA SUPERCROSS: Phoenix SX Preview

Round one of the Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Series was simultaneously full of surprises and fulfilled expectations. San Manuel Yamaha's Chad Reed was somewhat of a surprise winner in the 450cc class over defending champ (and 13-race winner in 2007) James Stewart of the Monster Energy Kawasaki squad. In the Lites class, however, it would be foolish at this point to call it a surprise to see Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey win a main event, because he did so at Anaheim I for the fifth time in nine career AMA Supercross races.

But now the mud of Anaheim I is replaced with a guaranteed dry track inside Phoenix, Arizona's Chase
Field and its retractable roof. Now that mud is going to be taken out of the picture, round two may be the true indicator of which riders we should expect at the front of both classes (at least for the western swing of the series) from here on out.

Not a single one of Reed's 27 career AMA Supercross victories has come in Phoenix. Stewart, on the other hand, has won there three times – twice on 125s and last year on his KX450F on his way to the championship. However, if their respective speed at Anaheim I is any indicator, it's a safe bet to say that the 450cc main event is going to come down to a battle between Reed and Stewart.
