The second race of the inaugural Race to the Championship proved to be a night of resurgence for Babbitt’s Monster Energy/ASMOIL Kawasaki presented by Maxxis rider Tyler Bowers. The eighth round of the 2013 AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, featured one hotly-contested night of action inside INTRUST Bank Arena, in Wichita, Kan.

After winning the opening round of the Race to the Championship last weekend, points leader and Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki rider Zach Ames secured the holeshot in the first Main Event of the evening. It wasn’t long before Bowers slipped by his teammate for the lead and carried it through to the finish of the 12-lap Main Event. Ames maintained the runner-up spot, while Team Faith/FLY Racing KTM’s Jeff Gibson and Mosites Motorsports Kawasaki’s Michael McDade battled for third. McDade made a pass on Gibson early, but then suffered misfortune. Gibson held on to finish third, while McDade needed to battle his way through the field to finish sixth.

The inversion prior to the second and final Main Event included the entire 16-rider field for the second straight weekend.

In the second Main Event, Team Faith/FLY Racing KTM’s Kelly Smith took advantage of his good starting spot to take the stop spot early and ultimately lead all 12 laps. Ticketwow Honda’s Michael Lang and BWRengines.com Honda’s Kyle White battled for the remaining podium spots, while Bowers, Gibson, and Ames all were forced to work their way through the field.

Smith went relatively unchallenged out front, but Bowers clawed his way to a third-place finish with Gibson in tow in fourth. The pair of podium results secured the overall for Bowers, his ninth overall win of the season. Gibson finished second overall.

The battle for the third spot on the overall podium came down to McDade and Ames. McDade overcame a start deep inside the top 10 to finish sixth in the second Main Event, while Ames suffered from early misfortune and had to settle for ninth. Earlier in the evening, McDade beat Ames in the final of the Head-to-Head Bracket Racing, giving him a championship bonus point that ultimately helped him secure a tie with Ames for third overall. By virtue of his stronger finish in the second Main Event, McDade claimed the position.

Bowers reclaimed the lead in the Race to the Championship and holds a two point lead over Gibson heading into this weekend’s race in Kansas City. Ames sits just three points behind.

In the Western Regional Arenacross Lites Class, BWRengines.com Honda’s Maxx Malatia outlasted in early challenge from Eleven10 Mods Honda’s Brady Kiesel to claim the win. Reynard Mod Suzuki’s Cory Green finished second, while Malatia’s teammate Kyle White finished third.

Currently, six points separate Malatia from points leader Michael Lang in the Western Regional Championship.
