BATES: Tomac Positioned For Lites Title, 450 Guest Ride?
Eli Tomac is on a roll, one that might just carry him to a premier class substitute opportunity in the near future.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 6 of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship from San Diego, CA will air LIVE on SPEED Saturday, February 11 at 10:30pm ET. #SXonSPEED

It’s a great time for Eli Tomac right now. After a slow start to the season, Eli has turned things around in a big way, taking a three-race streak into San Diego this weekend. I have personally never seen him ride with more confidence than he has right now. His three victories over the last three races have put him in full control of this championship as the West Region riders prepare to head into the mid-season break.

However, with three races still remaining before we ultimately crown a champion in this class we all know anything can still happen, which is the beautiful thing about this sport.

Eli is definitely on his way though. He’s been very consistent and having those wins is going to help him in the end. He’s also got a nice points lead, so we will see what he and his competitors do while they are on their break to prepare for that final push to the finish.

Speaking of, I heard a rumor in the Anaheim pits last weekend that was neither confirmed nor denied claiming there is a strong possibility that we will be seeing Eli on the 450, replacing Trey Canard, during the East Coast rounds. That would allow Eli to keep his feet wet racing and go out there and battle the big guys. We saw his teammate, Justin Barcia, do it last summer and it worked out extremely well for him. Maybe we'll see the same thing from Eli.

I spoke to both Mike LaRocco and Erik Kehoe about this possibility last weekend and they are definitely discussing it, but ultimately, it’s going to be a decision made by all three of them after thinking long and hard whether it is the right thing to do.

As for Dean Wilson -- he’s struggling right now to say the least. In Oakland, he was very disappointed but managed to salvage some points. He hurt himself a little bit in that crash but made a strong comeback. However, with the high expectations and all the hard work they had put into last week there has to be a little frustration. Paul Perebijnos, Dean’s mechanic, told me that he had put in 45 hours of work between Monday and Thursday and the whole Pro Circuit team focused solely on Dean and trying to get him back where he needs to be -- in the championship hunt.

I don’t think it’s over. It’s Supercross, I can’t stress that enough. You just never know what’s going to happen. It’s week-to-week. One week you could be there, one week you could be injured during testing before coming to the race.

I think it's about having some luck on your side and having heart, determination, and being smart is how you make your own luck at the end of the day. I don’t think it’s over for Dean, but it’s probably going to probably take a big mistake on Eli’s part and definitely a victory or two for Dean as well.
