PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 8 of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Atlanta, GA will air LIVE on SPEED Saturday, February 25 at 7:30pm ET. #SXonSPEED
Losing Chad Reed for the remainder of the Monster Energy Supercross season is a big blow. In the past few weeks, I felt that Reed and Ryan Villopoto were starting to distance themselves from the rest of the field. Unless guys like Ryan Dungey and James Stewart can find a way to start winning some main events, Villopoto will walk away with it.
Obviously, we would all like to have a close championship battle all the way to Las Vegas, but only the riders on the track can make that happen.
If Dungey and Stewart are going to keep pace with Villopoto -- and potentially get those wins -- it will need to come from great starts. They have to begin the main event in a good position. I mean, if Villopoto has the fastest lap time in practice or is close to doing so, starts up front out of the gate, and is able to ride 20 strong laps while the other top riders start mid-pack, it's going to be over on lap 1.
However, there is still a lot of racing left and we all know anything can happen.
Stewart is over 40 points out of the championship lead, but now that the schedule is heading east, this could be what he needs to start turning things around. At least I hope so, for him and the JGR team.
I hate to be negative, but I have seen no indication that things are changing for the better over there. James is a valuable part of our sport and I really hope he gets it figured out. I've been there on the track before and let me tell you first hand, it sucks when you’re struggling.
Justin Barcia was impressive in the opening round of the Lites East Region last weekend, grabbing a win to open his title defense out front. That effort showed me that Justin is putting in the work and doing what he needs to do. But, he better be, because he has some very motivated and talented racers that he is going up against in this region. He will have to earn every point he gets this season.
