Gillim Takes Maiden Rookies Cup Win

Hayden Gillim of Owensboro, KY stormed to a lopsided victory in Sunday's Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup at Mid-Ohio contest to claim his first-ever win in the series.

Gillim, who looked dominant throughout practice and qualifying, backed up that speed in the 16-lap affair, jumping out to take first from pole and pulling an immediate 1.5-second gap on the rest of the field by the conclusion of the opening lap.

At that point it was smooth sailing for Gillim, the cousin of the famed Hayden brothers, adding yet another Mid-Ohio victory to the family's collection.

"I was just hoping to get a good start -- I haven't been getting very good starts this year," Gillim admitted. "I was second going into the corner and I passed Benny
and I tried to build up a little bit of a gap the first couple laps. I got a little bit of a gap and once I got it up to three seconds I just tried to be smart and consistent. In the end it worked out. I came out first and I'm really happy."

After some early-season misfortune that cost Gillim in the points chase, he improved his championship position with a couple of podium finishes at Laguna Seca. That security allowed him to push a little harder this weekend.

"At Laguna I was just trying to stay up and get up in the top ten for Indy (the top 10 qualify for the Red Bull Riders Cup at Indianapolis and Valencia). Once I got here I was just focusing on winning. I went out and tried my hardest and I ended up with the win."
