MARTIN: Blake’s Baptism By Fire

We didn't have to wait until the 2010 silly season to see the evidence that Ben Spies' unprecedented rookie success is smashing down doors for AMA stars with World Superbike aspirations.

The AMA paddock has swiftly become recognized as a ready source of reserve talent for leading WSBK teams in need. Stiggy Honda turned to Jake Zemke, the last man to beat Spies and Mat Mladin head-to-head, in order to sub for John Hopkins at Monza and Miller Motorsports Park, and PBM Kawasaki snatched up Spies' buddy, Jamie Hacking, to fill in for Makoto Tamada at MMP, Misano, and Donington Park.

With obvious option Mat Mladin apparently not on the international market (and an almost certain target of a bidding war if he were), the next logical
selection might have to be the rising star tabbed in some corners of the AMA paddock as "The Next Ben Spies": Blake Young.

American Suzuki cut a deal to pry Young free loose from Team Hammer in order to slot him into Spies' vacated position with Yoshimura Suzuki this season. And blessed with huge potential and similar tutelage from 500GP legend Kevin Schwantz, it's no wonder that World Superbike teams have taken an interest in the promising Young.

At the recommendation of Schwantz, the 21-year-old Wisconsin native will make his World Superbike debut this weekend with Francis Batta's Suzuki Alstare Brux outfit at Donington Park, riding in place of the injured Max Neukirchner, taking over the reigns from Fonsi Nieto.
