MARTIN: Sorry Boys, Elena’s Win Was Legit
Never mind the red flags or unusual circumstances, Elena Myers' historic win at Infineon Raceway is one for the record books.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The AMA Pro Road Racing action from Sonoma, CA will air on SPEED today at 2:00pm EST, and tonight at 12:00am and 1:00am EST.

Following 16-year-old Elena Myers' monumental first-career AMA Pro Road Racing victory at Infineon Raceway on Saturday, the media center was abuzz with the historic implications of what had just occurred.

A number of journalists were debating the exact origins of AMA professional racing ('Did AMA-sanctioned national level competition kick off in the '70s?' 'No, that's not right… Maybe the '20? Or was it the '30s?') in an attempt to place some perspective on the enormity of Myers' status as the first female sprint race winner in series' history.

However, such talk came to an abrupt halt when a local reporter spoke up and said what he was almost assuredly not alone in thinking but just happened to be the only one brave (or clueless) enough to say… "Yeah, but that wasn't really a legitimate win, was it?"

He was quickly shot down and rightly so.

Now Elena's win in Saturday's AMA Pro SuperSport contest didn't come exactly as she would have scripted it. The Lucas Oil Roadracingworld.com RMR Suzuki rider was awarded her victory following a crash-strewn, twice red flagged race in which she never actually led a lap at the stripe under green flag conditions, but this is professional racing and you take your wins however you can get them.

And make no mistake, despite not getting the opportunity to claim the checkered flag on the track, Myers' maiden win was certainly as -- or more -- satisfying than a number of high-profile breakthrough victories that immediately spring to mind.
