MARTIN: Stating the Case for Casey

It's a curious thing; Casey Stoner goes out an completely dominates the opening round of the 2009 MotoGP World Championship, just as he had all of winter testing, and no one bats an eye, and yet at the same time there seems to be resistance in accepting what's becoming painfully obvious -- the young Australian is an all-time great in the making.

Just like every other rider on the grid, Stoner is made practically invisible by the overwhelming presence of Valentino Rossi, a rare motorcycling superstar who has transcended the sport and stands as arguably the greatest icon motorcycle racing has ever known.

Casey Stoner, the public figure… Casey Stoner, the reputation, is hopelessly overshadowed in his own paddock. Casey
Stoner, the racer is not, however, no matter how hard so many try to ignore this reality.

In a way it's relatively easy to understand. The 2007 World Champ is anything but the warm and fuzzy figure that's made Rossi such a breakout favorite of millions. Coming up well short in terms of charisma, Stoner is much likely to come across as brash, indignant, and yes, even a little bratty on occasion.

Unlike Rossi and a number of his peers, Stoner has never been the 'chosen one' or 'golden child.' Instead, he's scrapped his way up the career ladder and felt unappreciated all along the way -- a fact that he has never really tried to disguise, which in turn has made the public even less willing to appreciate him.
