Valentino Rossi is set to be joined by his long-serving crew chief Jeremy Burgess in a return to Yamaha next year.

The decisions for Rossi to walk out on Ducati and new owners Audi after failing to win a race was a "no-brainer" according to Burgess.

While setting up his new Yamaha deal Rossi discussed with Burgess a plan for him to return alongside and continue as crew chief for 2013 onwards.

Rossi and Burgess came to Ducati at the end of 2010 in a 'dream team' marriage that has ended in a nightmare with the combination unable to add to Rossi's 79 premier class wins.

Burgess has been crew chief for all of those wins by Rossi which came during stints with Honda and Yamaha.

Burgess says that Rossi, who will be 34 next February, simply ran out of time for Ducati to deliver on promises of an accelerated program of development for the Desmosedici.

"Clearly over the last 18 months Ducati have not moved swiftly enough with development for Valentino," Burgess said. "We are still on the same chassis as he raced in Qatar at the first race this year, and he is no closer to the front ten races later.

"It was a no-brainer; the only thing Valentino had to get over was that probably Jorge Lorenzo will be the #1 rider.

"Valentino asked me to go to Yamaha with him and while I haven't yet spoken to Yamaha that is my intention."
