Valentino Rossi says it is impossible to assess how fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso will perform when he takes his place at Ducati on a two-year deal from 2103.
With Rossi scuttling back to Yamaha after a pair of embarrassing seasons of under-performance on the Desmosedici, it is Dovizioso, 26, who is the man who has taken on the toughest task in racing.
That job is trying to lead Ducati out of the wilderness and back to the glory days they celebrated when Australian hero Casey Stoner tamed the often beastly Desmo V4, winning 23 races and the 2007 World Championship.
Rossi wishes Dovi all the best and hopes that increased budgets and resources from new owners Ducati will be a boost.
Coming to coming grips with the Ducati has proved beyond the talent and mindset of even Rossi whose reputation as the world's foremost development rider has been tarnished at the red team.
"The Ducati is very different to use in terms of riding and to be at the limit," Rossi said. "But it is impossible to say if for Dovi it will more or less difficult. Anyway, from next year a lot of things will change in Ducati so I have to give my good luck to Dovi and Ducati.
"I hope they able to fix some problem on the bike and be competitive."
Rossi has also confirmed that he will play no further role in testing or developing the new bike for 2013, no surprise now that he is heading to Yamaha.
However, he will continue to participate in test days to evaluate parts that are available for use over the final races of this season.
