• Dani Pedrosa starts from pole for the fourth time this year. Following wins at Indianapolis and Brno, Pedrosa will be aiming to take three successive wins for the first time in the MotoGP class.
• Jorge Lorenzo has qualified in second place on the grid and will be looking to extend his winning streak in Italy, having won at Mugello earlier this year and at both Mugello and Misano last year.
• Cal Crutchlow starts from the front row for the fifth time this year. After his third place finish at Brno, Crutchlow will be aiming to become the first British rider since Ron Haslam in 1987 to score back-to-back podium finishes in the premier-class of GP racing.
• Stefan Bradl, who is making his 100th Grand Prix start, heads the second row of the grid, equalling his best qualifying result in his debut season in the MotoGP class from Assen.
• Alvaro Bautista is in fifth place on the grid, which is his best qualifying result since he was on pole at Silverstone. Bautista won the 250cc GP at Misano in 2008.
• Valentino Rossi takes the final place on the second row, which equals his best ever qualifying result on the Ducati. Rossi is the only rider to have won twice at Misano in the MotoGP class.
• Andrea Dovizioso, who is in seventh place on the grid, has finished either third or fourth at the last six successive races.
• In the middle of the third row is Ben Spies, who has failed to finish at the last three races.
• Grand Prix debutant Jonathan Rea has qualified in ninth place on the grid. This is the first time that there have been two British riders in the top ten places on the grid in the premier-class of GP racing since the British GP in 1993 at Donington Park, when Carl Fogarty qualified fifth and Niall Mackenzie was ninth.
• After missing the last two races, Nicky Hayden is in tenth place on the grid, which is his lowest qualifying since the French Grand Prix.
• Randy de Puniet starts from 12th place on the grid and is the highest placed CRT rider in qualifying for the eighth time this year.
