• Jorge Lorenzo starts from pole for the sixth time this year. Lorenzo has finished second on the last four occasions he has started from pole; the only time he has won from pole in 2012 was the opening race of the year in Qatar.
• Dani Pedrosa is on the front row for the ninth successive race. Pedrosa has already won four races in 2012, which equals his best tally of wins in a single season in the MotoGP class from 2010.
• Cal Crutchlow starts from the front row for the fourth successive race. Crutchlow has already had ten top-six finishes this year which equals the record for most top-six finishes in the premier-class by a British rider in a single season held jointly by Barry Sheene, Ron Haslam and Niall Mackenzie.
• Ben Spies has qualified in fourth place on the grid for the seventh time this year. Spies will be aiming for his first podium since he was second in the final race of last year in Valencia.
• In fifth place on the grid is Alvaro Bautista, who has had a run of four successive top six finishes for the first time in the MotoGP class.
• Andrea Dovizioso has taken the final place on the second row of the grid. Dovizioso has already scored 179 points in 2012, which is already the highest points score achieved in one season by a rider from a satellite Yamaha team in the MotoGP era.
• On his return to racing after missing the last three races, Casey Stoner has qualified in seventh place on the grid, which is his worst qualifying result since the Malaysian GP in 2008.
• Stefan Bradl is in eighth place on the grid – his worst qualifying result since the US GP at Laguna Seca.
• Valentino Rossi starts from the final place on the third row and is the highest placed Ducati rider on the grid.
• The top CRT rider in qualifying for the sixth time this year is Aleix Espargaro, who is in 13th place on the grid.
