• Casey Stoner starts from pole for the fifth time in 2011. This is Stoner’s 27th pole in the MotoGP class. Stoner’s pole-position lap is the fastest ever lap by a motorcycle at the Mugello circuit. He will be aiming to finish on the podium for the 50th time in the MotoGP class.
• Ben Spies starts from second place on the grid - the same qualifying result he had one week ago at the Dutch TT. Spies will be aiming to be the first American rider to win back-to-back MotoGP races since Kenny Roberts Jr. in 1999.
• Marco Simoncelli starts from the front row for the sixth successive race. Simoncelli has crashed at four of the seven MotoGP races that have taken place so far in 2011, and in addition had a ride-through penalty at Le Mans.
• All nine previous four-stroke MotoGP races at Mugello have been won by riders who started the race on the front row of the grid.
• Fourth on the grid is Andrea Dovizioso, who has only once finished outside the top four in the first seven races of this year, when he was twelfth at the Spanish GP after entering the
pits mid-race for a tire change.
• Jorge Lorenzo’s fifth place on the grid equals his lowest grid position of the year, which he had at Le Mans.
• Colin Edwards takes the final place on the second row of the grid - his best qualifying result so far in 2011.
• Cal Crutchlow is the seventh fastest qualifier, making it four Yamahas in the top seven places on the grid.
• Dani Pedrosa, who dominated the Italian Grand Prix last year, is in eighth place on the grid on his return to racing. He missed the last three events following his crash at the French GP.
• Nicky Hayden is ninth on the grid and for the first time this year he is the highest placed Ducati rider in qualifying.
• Valentino Rossi is down in 12th place on the grid; the first time at Mugello that he has qualified lower than 4th in the MotoGP class. Rossi has finished in the top seven at the last eighteen successive races since he returned from the injury he suffered in his crash at Mugello last year.
