Two standout Indy performers stepped up their games and created a bit of separation at the top of the charts in Friday's afternoon free session for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP.

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa claimed top honors on the day, standing as the only man to break into the '39s, knocking down a 1:39.783 late in the session to solidify his position atop the charts.

The Spaniard won at the circuit in 2010 after crashing away the lead in '09 following a dominant lead-up to the contest. He came back to finish as runner-up to eventual title winner Casey Stoner at the circuit last season.

American Ben Spies was second, circulating 0.295 off Pedrosa at 1:40.078 with almost a half-second worth of padding to third-ranked Yamaha teammate, Jorge Lorenzo.

While Spies comes into Indianapolis in something of a funk and a Yamaha lame duck, he's previously shown clear ability to race for victory in Indiana. His two trips to the venue as a series regular have resulted in a pole position, a second-place finish, and a third-place result taken at the conclusion of a stirring charge up through the field.

Lorenzo regrouped from this morning's difficult FP1 to work up to third, fractionally quicker than Monster Yamaha Tech3 (and rumored Ducati-bound) runner Andrea Dovizioso.

FP1 leader Stoner was pushed down to fifth, fighting through issues that forced him to swap to his back-up RC213V during the afternoon session.

Dovizioso's teammate, Cal Crutchlow was next and last man in the '40s, with Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl clocking in at seventh and eighth, respectively.

That left the Ducati men, home track favorite Nicky Hayden and nine-time champ Valentino Rossi, to round out the top ten, ahead of just Karel Abraham, Toni Elias (who subed in for Hector Barbera who suffered a nasty highside in the morning to deter his comeback attempt) and the usual CRT contingent.

Attack Kawasaki's Steve Rapp didn't make it out on track after the team showed relatively promising morning form, lapping 0.099 within Colin Edwards' best and quicker than a pair of CRT regulars.
