Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa ended a twelve-year 'wet drought' with a sublime victory in Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix.

The ability to race in the rain was the great weakness that had haunted the talented Spaniard for over a decade, spanning 191 grand prix starts in 125cc, 2500cc and MotoGP.

But in his 192nd start Pedrosa described his 45th career victory in all classes as "amazing" in a rain-lashed race at Sepang.

It was his 21st MotoGP win and It came as a huge relief for Pedrosa as he kept his world title hopes alive against Yamaha rival Jorge Lorenzo.

As the pair enter this Sunday's Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island Lorenzo now leads by 23 points.

It is a comfortable margin but with Pedrosa now showing he can win in all conditions there is some degree of late-season pressure in the title chase.

"I was very scared of wet races from when I was young," Pedrosa said. "I have carried this around with me for my whole career and now I can put this away in my pocket and sleep a little better.

"All my career I have been fighting with this issue and for many years I have been trying to improve.

"Before I was really weak in the rain but this win feels unbelievable."

Pedrosa won his sixth race of the season and moved to within striking distance of Lorenzo should the title leader make a mistake or suffer an uncharacteristic result ahead of Sunday's Australian GP, the penultimate race of the season.

Since winning his first GP of the season in Germany in July, Pedrosa has won six out of the past nine races in a late surge for a first MotoGP championship.

Heavy rain, gloomy overcast conditions and standing water that had bikes aquaplaning brought out the red flag after 13 of 20 laps at Sepang.

Pedrosa was declared the winner, finishing 3.7s ahead of Lorenzo, who he had overtaken for the lead on lap ten.

“I was leading and I was so focused and I knew the conditions were getting worse and worse," he said. "I’ve been lucky to win it but also Jorge was lucky not to get chased by Casey and Nicky or even crash. But at least I did my job. To win in the rain is incredible."
