PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix from Laguna Seca will air on SPEED on Sunday, July 29th at 6:00pm ET. Qualifying will air on SPEED on Saturday, July 28 at 11:00pm ET and free practice will air on SPEED2 Friday, July 27 at 5:10pm ET.

The MotoGP World Championship arrives in Laguna Seca for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix with a number of big name riders looking to make a point.

From the top of the championship tally to riders shockingly low on the order, Laguna Seca stands as an opportunity to signal intentions moving forward.

Ben Spies

American Ben Spies has suffered through what can only be described as a nightmarish season. Expected to rise to the level of serious title contender as the championship transitioned to 1000cc equipment in 2012, instead Spies has been mired by bad luck and poor results.

As a result, he's decided to choose a different path in 2013 and very well may be exiting the MotoGP World Championship altogether.

Spies' point to prove is clear. He has only a limited number of races remaining aboard the potent works Yamaha to demonstrate that he is in fact one of the five most talented racers on the planet.

Spies' record in AMA Superbike is unprecedented (pit up against Mat Mladin no less). His single season in World Superbike was epic and may never be equaled, especially when you consider that he was a world-level rookie racing on unfamiliar tracks, aboard unfamiliar equipment, with unfamiliar tires, and facing unfamiliar riders. His first two years in MotoGP were exceptional as he raced to the podium as a rookie on support equipment and scored a maiden victory in his first year on works machinery.

However, MotoGP is a 'what have you done for me lately' business and Spies needs to get to work to remind people of his immense talent.

Laguna Seca is as good a place as any to do so. Spies enjoyed some of his finest AMA moments in Monterey and has shown well here in MotoGP as well. A monster weekend would do wonders for his confidence and reputation.
