Valentino Rossi has joined his American teammate, Nicky Hayden, in rejecting the latest Ducati engine modification that has failed to deliver the promised smoother power delivery.

With Rossi echoing the thoughts of 2006 World Champion Hayden, it appears that Ducati are making painfully slow progress in advancing the performance of the GP12 to level that will satisfy the competitive demands of their riders.

The motor upgrade was scheduled to be available from the British GP at Silverstone in two weeks to fit the MotoGP mileage regulations. However, both Rossi and Hayden say they prefer to stick with the current motor spec pending further development.

Seven-time MotoGP world champion Rossi says that a new aluminum swingarm also needs further work to confirm it as a step forward from the current carbon fiber unit. Rossi, like Hayden, is relying on revisions to engine management software to tame the aggressive power delivery of the Desmosedici V4.

“For me it will be very difficult to use the new engine in Silverstone because the engine that can be ready for then doesn’t make any difference," said a downbeat Rossi. "We need something more, but Ducati needs more time to finish the work, especially to set all the mapping of the engine, so maybe it will be more around Laguna Seca.

“The latest electronics help me in acceleration and the bike is easier to ride, but we also need more mechanical grip from the setting and this is the main problem.

"To use the potential we need more mechanical grip. I like the electronics and I will continue to use them. We suffer a lot with rear grip in acceleration but each change we try has a bad effect on the front. I lose the feeling on the front. We are quite worried because we have to understand a way to increase the rear grip without losing the front feeling."
