• Casey Stoner starts from pole for the fourth time this year. Stoner has just one win from his previous three poles in the MotoGP class at the Sachsenring – in 2008 on a Ducati.
• Ben Spies equals his best qualifying result of the year, which he achieved at Silverstone. Spies will be aiming to finish on the podium for the first time since the final race of 2011 at Valencia.
• Dani Pedrosa, who has won in Germany for the last two years, starts from the front row for the fifth time in 2012. Pedrosa will be looking to take his first win since the Japanese GP last year.
• In fourth place on the grid is Cal Crutchlow, maintaining his record of being in the top five at every qualifying session he has taken part in this year.
• Jorge Lorenzo has qualified in fifth place on the grid, which is his lowest qualifying result since he was fifth on the grid at Mugello last year – a race that he won.
• Taking the final place on the second row is Stefan Bradl. He will be aiming to improve on the best result by a German rider in the premier-class at Sachsenring since Grand Prix racing returned to the circuit, which was 7th by Ralf Waldmann in 1998 riding a Modenas.
• Heading the third row is Nicky Hayden, the highest placed Ducati rider on the grid. Hayden has finished on the podium on four occasions at the Sachsenring circuit.
• In eighth place on the grid is Andrea Dovizioso, who has three top-five finishes in the MotoGP class at the Sachsenring, but has not had a podium at the track.
• Valentino Rossi starts from the final place on the third row. Rossi has won four times in MotoGP at the Sachsenring circuit; on a 990cc Honda, twice on a 990cc Yamaha and once on an 800cc Yamaha.
• In tenth place on the grid, and highest-placed CRT rider, is Aleix Espargaro, which is his best qualifying result of the year and equals the best CRT qualifying position so far by Randy de Puniet at Jerez.
