AMA Superbike stars Ben Spies and Jamie Hacking registered impressive MotoGP race day performances on Sunday at Laguna Seca, tearing their way up the field despite being pit up the best riders the world has to offer.

Two-time AMA Superbike champ Spies was one of the very fastest men on the track over the race's second-half after being shuffled backwards early, logging numerous laps in the '22s and trailing only Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner in terms of sheer speed as the laps wound down.

The Rizla Suzuki wild card climbed to as high as seventh but just missed the position due to a hard charge from Toni Elias, who followed Spies up through the ranks.

Kawasaki Racing Team sub Hacking
finished the opening lap close to dead last but came from several seconds back to overtake a who's who list of international stars. Hacking actually caught up to Spies and the two ran several quick laps in formation before Hacking was also of victim of the fast-moving Elias, who dropped him from 10th to his eventual finishing position of 11th.

The race was won in a classic by Valentino Rossi, who pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat to defeat the overwhelming favorite Casey Stoner, who actually crashed in a desperate bid to get past the Italian. Stoner remounted and finished second.

Rizla Suzuki's Chris Vermeulen rounded out the podium while former AMA Superbike champ Nicky Hayden took fifth.
