MOTOGP: Spies Claims Sixth in Indy GP

Rizla Suzuki wild card Ben Spies backed up his impressive qualifying performance in the dry with another eye-catching ride in Sunday's Red Bull Indianapolis GP, which was contested in wet and windy conditions.

The triple AMA Superbike champ got away in seventh and quickly overtook Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa for sixth. The Texan then worked to cut the gap to reigning MotoGP king Casey Stoner and JiR Scot Honda's Andrea Dovizioso, closing in to right on their wake before the race was ultimately red flagged and called complete with eight laps remaining as the weather continued to worsen.

Spies' sixth-place run gave his fading '09 GP hopes a boost as he outpaced Rizla Suzuki regulars (and 2009 entries)
Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi in both the wet and dry and Indianapolis. Vermeulen finished ninth while Capirossi gook 16th in the difficult conditions.

The historic inaugural race was won by legend Valentino Rossi, who moves into sole possession of the all-time premier class wins record, breaking a tie with Giacomo Agostini with his 69th. Rossi had to work past home favorite Nicky Hayden to claim the position.

Hayden then held off Rossi's Fiat Yamaha teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, to claim second, his best result of the season just days in advance of his expected confirmation to join Casey Stoner at Ducati Corse next season.
