It has taken just six races but the MotoGP world title aspirations of Ben Spies are over for 2012.
Now there is just one focus. To bring some momentum to his stalled campaign and race for wins -- and his place in the Yamaha factory squad for 2013.
Spies goes into Saturday's Dutch TT defending the superb race win, his first and still only MotoGP victory that he scored at the historic Assen circuit last year.
The first season of 1000cc promised so much for the former World SBK champion but the Texan has gone without a podium in the opening six races.
And Yamaha are playing a waiting game with plenty of talent in line to race alongside team leader Jorge Lorenzo next year with the Spaniard recently signed for a further two seasons.
Spies comes off contract this year and the challengers for his spot in the works team include Monster Tech3 Yamaha riders Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso.
As speculation mounts -- and Yamaha MotoGP boss Lin Jarvis makes it clear that results will count in contract talks -- Spies says he is unworried as he begins a crucial sequence of three consecutive races in Holland, Germany, and Italy.
"As soon as Jorge signed everybody is in a big scramble (for next year), and that's how it works. But right now all I can do is worry about myself and my results," Spies said. "Whatever happens I'm calm about it. I'll go about my business and get everything done and then see how the cards fall for the future.
"It's been a rough start to the season and not just bad luck. But you have to remind yourself of the past 10 years of racing and what you have done and that things don't always go to plan."
