Ben Spies is hoping that Sunday's Catalunya Grand Prix in Barcelona will lift the dark cloud that has been hanging over his jinxed start to the MotoGP championship.

Spies has endured a horrendous start to the 18-race campaign in his second season with the factory Yamaha squad alongside 2010 world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

A combination of technical issues, bad luck, and some mistakes have combined to send he Texan tumbling out of title contention to 11th in standings on just 18 points.

With two race wins it is teammate Lorenzo who leads the points going into his Barcelona home race, the fifth round of the series.

Spies is quietly confident that Sunday's 25-lapper at a sunny and hot Catalunya Circuit will present him a fresh start. The Texan endured his worst result of a so far uninspiring season two weeks ago with a 16th place finish aboard a Yamaha M1 in the French GP at a wet and cold Le Mans.

"This weekend I'm just pretending I haven't raced at all this year," said Spies after day one of practice for the Catalunya GP. "As soon as you have a few bad weekends and your whole world is falling apart and you get in a slump you know you can't fix it overnight.

"I have a good team and we are taking it step-by-step and building my confidence back up. I had a good feeling today but we can make it better.

"I'm not saying we can challenge for the win but we can have a lot better weekend than the past few races."
